Meet John McCann
John McCann has spent a lifetime in Republican campaigns and public service. His service over the years has included serving as Secretary, Finance Committee Chair, Legal Counsel, Member of the Bergen County Republican Committee, Municipal Chair in Cresskill and Sargent At Arms for the BCRO. John has also advised multiple Republican campaigns as Campaign Manager, Legal Counsel, and on multiple campaign steering committees. Additionally, John served as President of the Oakland Republican Club.
John’s public service includes three terms as Cresskill Councilman and he is completing his second term as Oakland Councilman. Presently, he serves as President of the Oakland Council and as Council Liaison to Flood Commission. His Committee assignments include the Law and Public Safety Committee, the Budget Finance Committee and the Administration Committee.
John’s professional career has been as an attorney in General practice with an emphasis on government, employment practice, and civil litigation. He currently serves as Borough Attorney for Emerson, New Jersey and as General Counsel to New Jersey Sheriff’s Association. He has represented government entities including Cresskill, Palisades Park, and Paramus. Additionally, John has served as Special Advisor to multiple Chiefs of Police across New Jersey.
John received his BA in Political Science from Pace University, Masters in Government Administration from the Fels Center of Government at the University of Pennsylvania, and his Juris Doctorate from Queens College at City University.
John’s council tenures on both Councils has focused on reducing government spending, opposing tax increases, and promoting self-sustaining public projects. His legal and policy expertise influenced local governance. John has focused on fiscal responsibility and public safety.
John and his wife Sharon have been married 35 years and have two adult daughters.
